“Christian Exclusivism and Religious Tolerance”

by Prof. Jeroen de Ridder, Ph.D.

Friday, 26 August 2016, pukul 19.30
Clearly, Christians believe in the basic tenets of the Christian faith, such as those listed in the ecumenical creeds. Moreover, reflective Christians will typically take themselves to do so on good grounds. They take themselves to be intellectually responsible or rational in believing as they do. But are they right? In this lecture, I will discuss and reply to, two related concerns about the intellectual standing of Christian belief, both having to do with religious diversity. The first is that Christians should give up their religious belief once they realize that there are so many intelligent and thoughtful people who hold different religious convictions, or no religious convictions at all. After all, if you discover that someone who is more or less your intellectual equal disagrees with you, shouldn’t you give up your own belief? The second concern is that Christian belief will make you intolerant. After all, if Christian beliefs are true, some lslamic beliefs must be false, atheism must be false, etc. so, if a Christian really thinks that his beliefs are true, he is thereby being arrogant and intolerant.
